Dalmatia was part of the Austrian Empire (1797-1920). Prior to 1797, Dalmatia was part of the Venetian Republic.   As a result of WWI and the Treaty of Rapallo, Dalmatia became part of the newly formed state of Yugoslavia in 1920.
Today, it is part of Croatia -- back to how it was prior to 1102 A. D.

On behalf of relatives, I am researching the COLUDROVICH lineage.

It is my belief that Dominic Coludrovich emigrated from Dalmatia (Austria) since most Slavic emigrants to Plaquemines Parish were from this east European region on the Adriatic Sea.

According to the 1900 U.S. Census for Plaquemines Parish, Dominic was 22-years-old when he arrived in America from Austria in 1867.   Regrettably, the census does not give the name of his Austrian town or village.   The census states that he was an oyster fisherman.  Whether Dominic lived elsewhere before settling in Plaquemines Parish or having worked at something differently is yet to be learned.   Moreover, as of this writing I do not know whether Dominic came to America alone or with relatives.

 The surname COLUDROVICH is uncommon.  As I suspected, the original spelling was changed.  Patience and perseverance has its rewards.  In my search on Coludrovich, I found a Guest Book message posted 27 Dec 2001 by M/M Earl J. Coludrovich III, of Houston, Texas, that says the original spelling for Coludrovich was KOLUDROVIC.  Backtracking to the source of this message, I found the Web site: KOMIZA: Land of My Forefathers, a book by David Felando (link given below).  From this site I selected the link, 'The Story,' which contains the detailed history of Komiza (Comisa) from its pre-historic origin to the present day.  If you're not interested in reading the entire history of Komiza, go to page two, 'A Pirate's Life,' where you will find the family name Koludrovic.  For those of you who would like to correspond with Mr. & Mrs. Coludrovich, their E-Mail address is obtainable by visiting Mr. Felando's Guest Book (scroll down about one fifth of the way).
