The 1900 U.S. Census for Plaquemines Parish records her name ELLEN, not Helen or Helene as some sources say, nor is Dominic's name spelled with a 'K' at the end.  Also, the census shows where she had a total of 8 children; apparently two had died when this census was taken.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the communities on the east bank of the Mississippi River, Bertrandville is located 21 miles above Pointe-a-la-Hache.

It would be interesting to know how Miss Morgan came to meet Mr. Coludrovich.  Romance has a way of overcoming the greatest obstacles, but it's possible that Dominic also lived in or near Bertrandville and they relocated to Boothville after marrying.

After Sunday worship, Uncle Steve and Aunt Ellen would visit his mother and occasionally I would tag along.  If my memory serves me correctly, I remember Mrs. Dominic* having pierced ears.  This attracted my attention since she was the only elderly lady that I knew with pierced ears.  She wore drop earrings, and for some inexplicable reason I want to say they were set with either garnet or ruby-colored stones.  At that time, Mrs. Dominic was very old; her customary sitting place was a rocking chair located in the kitchen.   She appeared petite, and was frail and very soft-spoken.  Her shutter-windowed house was dark, musty, and spooky, as were so many homes of the elderly in those days; nevertheless, I enjoyed the visits.  A child could experience a bad case of fright attending a 'wake' in one of these old homes...wraiths appeared to be floating everywhere except in one's imagination.  I don't know whether Mrs. Dominic covered her mirrors during a thunderstorm as some of the local folks did, but this tradition was a throwback to Dominican (Hispaniola) folklore.

* It was commonplace for relatives to call a man's wife by her husband's given name instead of his surname.  As innocuous as this practice was, it has drawbacks.  For example, Joseph Hubert Buras was called Joe Prien, using the first names of both he and his father, Cyprien.  For years, I mistakenly believed that Mr. Joe's surname was Prien instead of Buras, since this is all that I had ever heard him called.  Researching a family line with a combination of names such as this is cause for one to be up against a veritable brick wall.

One day Joe arrives on his bicycle, whether to visit or give Uncle Steve a haircut, I am uncertain; nevertheless, Aunt Ellen was in good form that sunny day...she suggested we pull a prank on Joe.  Handing  me a tube of red lipstick and while entertaining Joe, I merrily went about the task of grinding the entire tube into Joe's bicycle seat, which if I remember correctly, was dark brown leather that hid the lipstick nicely.   I haven't a clue as to how many houses Joe called upon that day before discovering that the seat of his khaki pants was well stained from having the lipstick grind into the fiber as he happily peddled his bike from house-to-house.  I'm sure that once he discovered the unthinkable, he knew the source of the devilish prank...and as you might know...I was the fall guy; never mind the fact that the lipstick did not miraculously fall into my INNOCENT childish hands.

Four Anthony Coludrovichs are confusing.  According to the Plaquemines Gazette Obits for 1952, posted on the Internet, Rosalie (aka Rosaline) Buras' husband, Anthony (#1), is listed as Sr.; her son, Anthony (#2), is listed as Jr.  Problems arise thereafter with Anthony (#3), also called Jr., and his son, Anthony (#4), is called the III.   If all four have identical names, the lineage should be: Anthony Coludrovich, Anthony Coludrovich Jr., Anthony Coludrovich III, and Anthony Coludrovich IV.  There is no need to add 'Sr.' to the progenitor's name.  Perhaps whoever submitted the information for Rosaline's obituary assumed that Anthony (#2) was a Jr.
